Aims and Objectives

Initiative Overview

The Academic Integrity Officer (AIO), whose role is funded by SATLE, has engaged in a multi-faceted approach to support the building of a culture of academic integrity within DCU and beyond. Specifically, for professional development, the AIO created and delivered several workshops on academic integrity, including topics on GenAI & academic integrity for staff. The AIO has been leading the reiteration of the National Forum’s Digital GenAI badge in DCU staff. For the National Academic Integrity Week, the AIO coordinated a staff session and a student contest to celebrate the week. The AIO also participated in a panel discussion followed by an invited guest speaker from Brock University on academic integrity, an event coordinated by ILTA, NAIN, and DCU. Moreover, the AIO has given talks to School of Nursing Industry Partners, ECIU visitors from INSA- Rennes in France, and in a National Forum Associates’ meeting. As a member of NAIN, the AIO has been collaborating with other AIOs to proceed with a Delphi-method survey project to analyse Academic Integrity Officer roles and responsibilities, which aims to create guidance for positioning AIO related roles across Irish HEIs and Education and Training Boards. The AIO also collaborated with other AIOs and co-published a blog post for the International Centre for Academic Integrity (ICAI). As for policy and procedures, the AIO has been coordinating the enrollment and supervision of the Mandatory Academic Integrity Training program required for students who are confirmed of academic misconduct. The AIO has also been contributing to the reviewing of the university’s Academic Integrity Policy and Misconduct Procedures.

For supporting SATLE initiatives in DCU, the AIO offered tailored support for these initiatives. A flexibility approach is adopted to support SATLE projects based on specific needs from SATLE project leaders and discipline-specific requests on academic integrity.

The Academic Integrity Officer also promoted the sharing of developed academic integrity resources from SATLE beyond local level to university level and national level.

Impact and Evidence of Success

The evaluation of impact is from qualitative feedback. As for work directly related to the AIO’s role, staff found the workshops helpful for academic development and emotional support. The guest speaker for the National Academic Integrity Week complimented on the AIO’s strong scholarship of academic integrity. Students found the mandatory training helpful to prevent future misconduct. One example of the impact of the AIO’s support to SATLE initiatives was a project on developing a learning resource for students to explore moral issues related to GenAI. The AIO invited the project lead to share in DCU and National events. Both sharing received very positive feedback. Requests were made to integrate the project in DCU and other universities.

 

Top Tips

  1. Create resources for staff and students based on their specific needs and concerns. This ensures targeted support.
  2. Although some developed resources are discipline-specific, some such as programme mapping tools or student-front training projects can suit the needs across disciplines and be shared beyond the local level.
  3. Follow up on projects developed from previous ones, as they provide a lot of new insights.

Future Directions and Sustainability

The AIO will continue the multi-faceted approach to support the building of an academic integrity culture within and beyond DCU.

The tailored support to SATLE initiatives on academic integrity and promoting the sharing of good sources beyond local level will keep being applied. More actions will be followed to ensure that the sharing of resources and integration of resources beyond the local level are completed. It is aimed that a community of practice for academic integrity could be established, and it could support the sustainability of sharing resources and discussing key challenges related to academic integrity.
