Bertie Kelly outlined NCI’s approach to sustainability through the lens of stewardship, transparency, and responsible governance. As a not-for-profit registered charity that operates outside the traditional public university model, NCI relies heavily on diversified commercial income and therefore places particular emphasis on ensuring that every investment demonstrates both educational and environmental value.

Mr Kelly described major institutional initiatives to improve resource efficiency, including a full LED retrofit across campus, district heating optimisation, enhanced waste management systems, and forthcoming upgrades to aging plant and machinery that are projected to reduce emissions by 30–40%. A partnership with Green Tally — founded by an NCI alumnus — has enabled systematic, data-driven measurement of scope 1, 2 and now scope 3 emissions, with findings published publicly to reinforce a culture of transparency.

He also pointed to the alignment between operational sustainability and academic innovation, noting that NCI embeds environmental, social, and economic sustainability across its strategy, campus operations, and research agenda. For Mr Kelly, stewardship is enacted in everyday decisions as much as in major capital investments, and is strengthened through clear communication with students, staff, and stakeholders. This governance model positions sustainability not as a standalone initiative but as an integrated institutional practice.
