John Andrews highlighted how sustainability is being embedded across teaching, learning, and digital innovation at NCI. Central to this work is the Digital Sustainability Badge, a six-hour, fully asynchronous SDG-focused micro-credential developed through collaboration between the Digital Learning team and the Centre for Education and Lifelong Learning. The badge consists of four core modules—introduction, climate change, social justice, and personal action—plus learner-selected electives, allowing flexible engagement with SDG topics.

Although not mandatory, the badge provides a cross-programme foundation in sustainability and serves as a shared learning resource lecturers can direct students to when undertaking assignments linked to the SDGs. Mr Andrews noted that the badge creates an avenue for students to express individual commitment beyond programme requirements, while also offering a broader SDG overview than discipline-specific modules typically allow.

Drawing from interviews with faculty across computing and business, Mr Andrews reported increased student awareness and engagement, with growing evidence of sustainability shaping assignments, project framing, and reflective practice. He also shared qualitative feedback from an MBA student who described the Sustainable Business Leadership module as transformative, influencing her to develop a sustainability strategy for her organisation. John concluded that NCI’s “internal voice” — the experiences and reflections of staff and students — increasingly drives meaningful external impact, reinforcing sustainability as a shared institutional culture.
